'ILA' is a young wife seeking her husband's attention and looking for ways to put romance back into her marriage , one of which is to cook delicious  Lunches for him, she sends The Lunchbox  through the famous 'Mumbai Dabbawalas' , a complicated system that picks up and delivers Lunches from resturants or homes to people at work . Due to a mix up , The Lunchbox 'ILA' prepares for the husband gets delivered, in sted, to  'SAAJAN'. 'SAAJAN' , a widower who is about to retire from his job as an accountant. 
An unusual friendship soon develops between the two ( 'SAAJAN'&'ILa') .
